The clothes we wear to be agile, flexible and sweaty are a far cry from the luxe tailoring, architectural structures, refined fabrics and purposeful cuts that make up the trillion-dollar fashion industry. At their worst, leggings aren’t flattering, sports bras have a touch of the orthopaedic about them and running trainers scream American dad. So why are we all trading in Noa Noa for Nike?

The athleisure as day wear trend is a by-product of the wellness movement, inherited from LA, which brought kale and quinoa into our lives as well as form-fitting leggings and racerback tops. Now a strange sartorial badge of honour, switching out your jeans for Barry’s Bootcamp merchandise has become a way of showing the world you’re a dedicated fitness freak – even if the reality is you’ve rolled from bed to brunch.

Unconventional though the look may be, there’s no denying it has its merits: in a world where we’re all rushing from A to B, having comfortable, unfussy clothing makes a lot of sense. But if we’re going to accept gym wear as a bona fide part of our fashion repertoire, there has to be some ground rules. Here are the tips to remember before leaving your house in lycra…

Keep Things Simple

Much like when dressing in ‘normal’ clothing, keeping your look monochrome and fuss-free is a fail-safe way to look pulled-together. We recommend investing in black leggings, white sneakers, and keeping your hair and beauty look polished too – a blow dry and fitness gear is a surprisingly glamorous combo.

Invest In Your Sports Wear

When you’re after something to throw on for the gym, the high street delivers on workout gear – but if you’re rocking the style for lunch or a coffee date, you’ll need some elevated pieces to compensate. A quick flash of the Lululemon logo or Under Armour signature is enough to earn you in-the-know points.

Try Out Niche Brands

Show off your fashion knowledge by sporting styles from cult Aussie brand P.E Nation, high-tech HPE leggings and mesh panelled pieces from Alo Yoga. Consider these the Monse and Off-Whites off the work out world – only cheaper.

Accessorise Appropriately

Whether it’s a pair of oversized sunnies or a designer bag, adding a few choice accessories to your workout look can elevate it for everyday wear. Just trade in a hoodie for a leather biker or a sweatband for a leather cuff to pull your look together.

Know Your Limits

Athleisure may be more acceptable now than ever before, but that doesn’t mean that anything goes. Stomach-exposing sports bras are an absolute no-no (no matter how protruding your abs), whilst cycling shorts and skinny vests break all social conventions. Our advice? Invest in a great long-sleeved zip up – we love Nike’s dry fit styles – or a throw-on gilet, for a respectable take on the look.
